Age is a hot topic these days, whether it’s older people doing amazing things, or very young people doing amazing things. People are captivated by this topic as we move into a time where our population as a nation is older than ever with a median age of around 38 years old. According to the Pew Research Center, “by the year 2060 we’ll have almost as many Americans over age 85 as under age 5. This is the result of longer life spans and lower birthrates. ”
As we are in the midst of a sea of media, it is coming to our attention more and more that there are some remarkable stories of perseverance and triumph despite age. We hear “40 is the new 20”, “50 is the new 30” and on and on. People have more opportunities than ever to take care of themselves and the ones that do shine as examples in our culture.
Conversely, the very young in our population are breaking down barriers as well. Granted, this is an era when everything you do is immortalized for ever on Youtube but..there are some truly captivating moments happening in the “kiddo” category.
Here at Mocean365/MoceanFit, we are ourselves moving into age categories once considered far “over the hill” despite making steady improvements in our health each and every year. I will turn 45 this spring while Meg gets to see once and for all if 40 is in fact the new 20. Are these facts making me/us introspective to even produce a post like this? It seems so as we are not only producing a post, but we will be turning this into a series with a cool kid hashtag of #moceanfit4life.
What does it mean to be “MoceanFit”? Here are 3 key elements..(all of them pretty closely related)
- At it core, being Adaptable to life’s challenges would be at the top of the list. Being adaptable transcends just being strong in the gym. It’s the ability to be able to jump into most any challenge inside or out and be able to at least hang. Being a generalist vs. a specialist.
- Resilience is another key element. Can you take on challenges while keeping yourself safe or without constantly getting hurt? This becomes paramount as we move forward in years! Your training takes a harder look at recovery and lifestyle considerations that prior in your life may have not been considerations.
- Diversification! Trying new challenges and continuing to explore the many opportunities whether its movement or adventure, art or travel, occupational or recreational. Life is short, we know this so why not make the most of it?!
We are kicking this off with a video that I found to be incredibly inspiring. This woman defies age and adversity and battles on until the end. Check it out and leave a comment after you watch it with your reaction and spread this to others who may benefit from its lesson(s). And mostly, don’t ever let age get you down. Remember Adapt, get Resilient and Diversify and let it all unfold as you follow your passions!
